Privacy & Data Notice.
This notice explains what personal information SETLA Payments collects, why we collect it, and how we protect it, in line with South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). It applies alongside our Terms & Conditions.
1. Information we collect
Depending on how you use SETLA, we collect:
- Account details: your name, email address, phone number and password.
- Identity information: your South African ID number, a photo of your ID document, and a live selfie taken during your application so we can compare it against your ID photo.
- Address and affordability information: your residential address, proof of address, monthly income and expenses.
- Banking information: your bank name, account holder name, account type, the last four digits of your account number, proof of banking and a recent bank statement.
- Payment information: processed by our payment partner, Yoco -- SETLA does not store your full card details.
- Usage information: basic, anonymous page-visit analytics (the pages you view and when), and a locally stored identifier used only to recognise your browser between visits and to keep your support conversation connected.
2. Why we collect it
We use your information to: verify your identity and prevent fraudulent or duplicate applications; assess affordability and decide on a spending limit; process your payments and manage your payment plan; communicate with you about your application, account and orders; and provide support when you reach out to us. We only use your ID number, ID document and live selfie for identity verification and fraud prevention -- not for any other purpose.
3. How your documents and selfie are protected
Your ID document, live selfie, proof of address, proof of banking and bank statement are stored in a private, access-controlled location. They are never made public and are never accessible via a direct link. Only active SETLA reviewers can access them, and only for the purpose of reviewing your application -- every time a document is viewed, it's retrieved through a short-lived, one-time secure link that expires within a minute, rather than being handed out as a permanent URL.
4. Who we share information with
We share the minimum information necessary with: Yoco, to process your payments; and UNIK Labs, to fulfil orders you place using SETLA. We do not sell your personal information, and we don't share your ID document, selfie or banking documents with any third party except where required by law or to prevent fraud.
5. How long we keep your information
We keep your account and application information for as long as your account is active, and for a reasonable period afterwards to meet legal, accounting, and fraud-prevention obligations. If your application is declined, we retain your documents for a period in case you appeal, and to prevent repeat fraudulent applications.
6. Your rights
Under POPIA, you have the right to: ask us what personal information we hold about you; ask us to correct inaccurate information; ask us to delete information we no longer have a lawful reason to keep; and object to certain uses of your information. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. If you're not satisfied with our response, you may also lodge a complaint with South Africa's Information Regulator.
7. Cookies and local storage
SETLA uses your browser's local storage to keep you signed in between visits and to remember an anonymous visitor identifier for support chat and basic page-visit analytics. We don't use third-party advertising trackers.
8. Security
We apply access controls, private storage, and short-lived secure links to protect your information. No system is completely immune to risk, but we design SETLA to only ever expose the minimum information necessary for the task at hand.
9. Changes to this notice
We may update this notice as SETLA's features change. Where changes are significant, we'll take reasonable steps to let existing account holders know.
10. Contact us
For any question about your personal information, or to exercise your rights under POPIA, contact us at support@uniklabs.co.za or through live support on your SETLA dashboard.
